Mama's Family
Domestic shenanigans entangle a kooky Midwestern family and its sharp-tongued matriarch. Based on a series of sketches that ran on 'The Carol Burnett Show.'
Good Times
The 'Maude' spin-off about a black family living in a Chicago housing project mined poverty, racism, inner-city woes and single-parent homes for humor, with varying degrees of success. J.J.'s enthusiastic 'dyn-o-mite!' became the show's catchphrase, and the series, created under Norman Lear's guidance, was a popular destination for viewers in the 1970s.
Sanford and Son
L.A. junk dealer Fred Sanford was Norman Lear's black counterpart to Archie Bunker. The gravel-voiced widower hurled outrageous one-liners at his Bible-toting sister-in-law, Esther; cooked up get-rich-quick schemes with buddies Grady (who got his own spin-off series in 1975) and Bubba; and feigned countless 'big ones' (heart attacks) to win the sympathy of long-suffering son Lamont. Based on the British series 'Steptoe and Son,' the show consistently ranked in the Top 10.
All in the Family
The groundbreaking, multi-Emmy-winning sitcom about bigoted Archie Bunker ended TV's innocence. Its protagonist was simultaneously lovable and pathetic and, series creator Norman Lear said, 'the bigger-than-life epitome of something that's in all of us, like it or not.' The series premiered on CBS on Jan. 12, 1971, changed its title to 'Archie Bunker's Place' in 1979 and ran on the network until 1983. It spun off the successful 'Maude,' 'The Jeffersons' and 'Good Times.'
The Dick Van Dyke Show
An often copied, rarely duplicated classic about TV writer Rob Petrie at home and work is as close as it gets to sitcom perfection. Sharply written, warmly acted by a brilliant ensemble cast and often sublimely funny, this brainchild of sitcom veteran Carl Reiner (who honed his comic skills working nine years with Sid Caesar) won many Emmys and, though it ran for only five seasons, has remained one of the medium's most enduring series.
Cheers
This hugely successful, multi-Emmy-winning sitcom is set in a friendly Boston bar run by Sam Malone, a former Red Sox pitcher and recovering alcoholic. A brilliantly written and performed ensemble comedy filled with colorful characters, the series, in its first five years, revolved around the on again-off again, dysfunctional romance between Sam and brainy waitress Diane. The series bowed in September 1982, ran for 11 seasons and spun off another all-time classic, 'Frasier.'
Happy Days
A sentimental, long-running sitcom about life in the 1950s centered on the squeaky-clean Cunningham family in Milwaukee and their relationship with Fonzie, a motorcycle-riding Casanova who became a pop-culture phenomenon during the show's heyday in the 1970s. One of the top-rated series of its time, 'Happy Days' withstood various cast changes over its 10-year run. The finale brought Joanie and Chachi's courtship to a happy end with an hourlong wedding that included Richie's return.
I Love Lucy
TV's first great sitcom centered on a zany New York housewife who wants desperately to get into showbiz and her Cuban bandleader husband who has his hands full trying to dissuade her. Also getting caught up in their shenanigans were the Mertzes, their landlords and best friends. A pioneer for being filmed before a studio audience with multiple cameras, the top-rated series racked up 180 episodes before ending in 1957. Several specials aired from '57 to '60 as 'The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.'
