The Rockford Files
Cranky but likable L.A. PI Jim Rockford pulled no punches (but took plenty of them) in this popular 1970s series, which won the star an Emmy and brought the character back in several TV-movies. Rockford was an ex-con (sent to the slammer for a crime he didn't commit) who took on cases others didn't want. He was aided by his tough old man, his lawyer girlfriend and some shady associates from his past.
Walker, Texas Ranger
Modern-day Texas Ranger, Cordell Walker's independent crime-solving methods have their roots in the rugged traditions of the Old West. Walker's closest friend is former Ranger, C.D. Parker, who retired after a knee injury, and now owns "C.D.'s," a Country/Western saloon/restaurant. Rookie Ranger, James "Jimmy" Trivette is an ex-football player who bases his crime-solving methods on reason and uses computers and cellular phones.
Magnum, P.I.
CBS reworked its successful 'Hawaii Five-O' formula into a hit spun around a charismatic PI. The scenic backdrop and action-oriented drama were similar, and the initial time slots were identical. Often, reference was even made to Steve McGarrett of 'Five-O.' Magnum, however, was a lot more vulnerable and sensitive than McGarrett, traits more in tune with the times that helped contribute to the Emmy-winning Selleck's enormous appeal.
Quincy, M.E.
A strong-willed L.A. coroner often clashes with his boss and the police by investigating crimes. Before 'Crossing Jordan,' and 'CSI' and its clones, there was this first-rate medical-examiner drama, which premiered as part of NBC's 'Mystery Movie' anthology. Jack Klugman received four Emmy nominations for the role of the doctor whose first name was never mentioned, and later appeared on 'Jordan' as a retired ME, though not as Dr. Quincy.
Lonesome Dove
A pair of longtime friends and former Texas Rangers crave one last adventure before hanging-up their spurs. After stealing over a thousand head of cattle from rustlers south of the border, they recruit an unlikely crew of hands to drive the herd 3,000 miles north to the grasslands of Montana.
Hunter
A rogue, 'Dirty Harry'-type detective enforces his own brand of tough justice ('works for me' was his catchphrase), and doesn't let red tape stand in the way. The son of a mobster, Det. Sgt. Rick Hunter is often paired with the no-nonsense Det. Sgt. Dee Dee McCall ('the brass cupcake') and often relies heavily on information from a savvy street hustler. After a successful 2002 TV-movie reunion, original stars Fred Dryer and Stepfanie Kramer reprised their roles for several new 'Hunter' episodes.
