Gunsmoke
Gunsmoke is an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman MacDonnell and writer John Meston. The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. The central character is lawman Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television.
Wagon Train
This classy Western followed the trials of a California-bound wagon train after the Civil War. There were regulars and some action, but the emphasis was on strong storytelling and top guests such as Bette Davis, Jane Wyman, Ronald Reagan, Lee Marvin and Joseph Cotten. John Ford even came on board to direct 1960's 'The Colter Craven Story.' John McIntire replaced Ward Bond after the latter's death in 1961. The Bond shows aired in syndication as 'Major Adams, Trailmaster.'
Laramie
Two brothers struggle to maintain their Wyoming ranch in the 1870s after their father's death. The cast included actor-songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, who penned classics like 'Star Dust' and 'Heart and Soul.'
Cheyenne
Tall and rugged Cheyenne Bodie is a scout, cowboy and sometime lawman drifting from job to job and adventure to adventure. The series began as a segment of 'Warner Bros. Presents.' When disgruntled star Clint Walker left the show in 1958, he was replaced temporarily by Ty Hardin as Bronco Layne. Walker returned in 1959, and Hardin carried his character over to 'Bronco,' a new series.
Have Gun, Will Travel
One of TV's most successful Westerns told of the hired gun Paladin, who plied his trade in 19th-century San Francisco with a calling card ('Have Gun, Will Travel...') that belied the compelling loner's cultured manner. When he wasn't eating fine food, engaged in polite conversation and dressed impeccably, he was an intimidating gunman dressed in black, striking out for the frontier and ready to kill if necessary. He was, as the theme song put it, 'a knight without armor in a savage land.'
Elkhorn
Reeling from an unimaginable loss, 25-year-old Theodore Roosevelt abandons New York politics and journeys to the lawless Dakota Badlands, where he establishes the sprawling Elkhorn Ranch and attempts to remake himself into a cowboy and a cattleman.
Open Range
Kevin Costner directed and stars in this provocative, beautifully acted Western reminiscent of "Unforgiven" and "Shane." Costner plays a wandering cowboy; Robert Duvall is his sage saddlemate; and together, they take on a brutal land baron who has killed a member of their crew.
The Rifleman
A widowed homesteader raised his son on a New Mexico ranch and helped the local sheriff battle desperadoes using a modified Winchester rifle. The series aired during the heyday of the Western on network television. During the 1958-59 season, this show's first, the genre accounted for seven of the Top 10 shows. 'The Rifleman' ranked fourth, below 'Gunsmoke,' 'Wagon Train' and 'Have Gun, Will Travel.'
